i got a new lap top yay! with any luck i will be doing my fractals again soon which i am excited for!!! i am so excited to be able to do art again! woot
Just to warn you about running fractal images on the laptop... They keep the processor pegged at 100% for the minutes to hours they run. That creates a lot of heat, which drives the fans. Laptop fans are not designed for continuous cooling. They were designed for Word, PowerPoint, and the like. (Unless you get a laptop which is advertised for gaming.) Even though it will slow things down, it may be in your best interest to find a freeware program that lets you throttle the processor usage and cap it at 50% or even 25%. It will slow things down, but it will extend the life of your fans. If the fans go, your laptop will follow in less than 30 seconds.
One of the other artists I follow here had that happen to him, and that's a periodic issue for those of us who run distributed computing applications.
thank you very much. i will keep that in mind, though i do have one meant for gaming aswell i hope im not burning out my fans already. what sorta freewear programs?
I'm afraid I don't know of any off hand... There used to be one called "Choke!", but that was years ago. I've actually never owned a laptop. If I need one for work, I borrow one from work, but I use a desktop (with extra cooling) otherwise.
If you go to a site like tucows.com or download.com, they usually have ratings for the software. Search sites like that for terms like "set processor usage", and look for a program that's both free and has a high rating.
Check the manuals on your laptop. If they didn't come with, most major vendors have them online. Look in the technical specs for fans and/or cooling system. You may see the acronym "MTTF", or "Minimum Time To Failure". That's the one you want to pay attention to.
